Jefferson County Commission Approves Economic Development Project Investments and Contributions to Ongoing Community Development

The Jefferson County Commission approved last week financial support for four economic development projects and invested in the Birmingham Business Alliance’s new Supplier Scale program. These investments are expected to continue the County’s continued growth trajectory.

 

In 2019, the County was fifth in the state for capital investment and fourth in job creation. In 2020, the County was fourth in capital investment, and first in job creation. In 2021, we were second in capital investment and number one again in job creation. (Source: Alabama Dept. of Commerce)

 

The projects include:

  • Pack Health, a local health care company with a capital investment of $5.2 million. This expansion is estimated to create 120 jobs over three years and 200 jobs projected by year five. Pack Health is an evidence-based patient engagement platform that changes health behaviors to close gaps in care and improve patient outcomes. The incentive amount is based on job creation.
  • Kratos, a national security solutions provider, that recently acquired the Southern Research Engineering division, will invest $26.6 million in the community, and an estimated 76 high paying jobs over a five-year period. Incentive amount is based on job creation.
  • The Bray, a Liberty Park Joint Venture with the City of Vestavia that will develop approximately 865 acres that will be the new headquarters for Medical Properties Trust and also have residential, hospitality, healthcare, parks, and schools. The project is expected to have a fiscal impact of $70 million in ad valorem taxes over the next 25 years for Jefferson County. 
  • Southern Research Institute, a non-profit scientific research organization, is expanding its facilities to develop commercialization capacity with a venture studio and new 200,000 square foot research laboratory space. The project is expected to add approximately 125 new well-paying research related jobs.
  • The Birmingham Business Alliance (BBA) is conducting a supply chain study and implementing a program called Supplier Scale to support business development. The county is investing $750,000 in this program.
