About the Tax Assessor
Gaynell Hendricks' undergraduate degree is from LeMoyne-Owen College with a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Rutgers University. Hendricks is the first African American and first woman Tax Assessor of Jefferson County, Al.
Under her leadership, the Tax Assessor's Office has seen technical advances and improvements, including the resurvey of Jefferson County which had not been done in over 75 years. She also received a prestigious honor for her leadership with remapping Jefferson County, now a model for the United States, and the largest project of its’ kind.
Gaynell, and husband, Elias, created and manage Wee Care Academy, a full-service childcare service. Formerly, she served on Boards like: The Birmingham Zoo, Shakespeare Festival Theatre, President of the Birmingham Museum of Art Sankofa Society, and Birmingham Shuttlesworth International Airport Board. She was the first woman to chair the Board when the airport embarked on a $300-million renovation.
She is married to Elias Hendricks Jr.; mother of three children, Daagye, Shia and Elias III; and grandmother to Noah.
